Progress...

Didn't manage to post yesterday due to a mix of hecticness and Blogger running slowly. I'm down to the last nine pages of The Great Game, with a further three pages roughed out already (see left for an example of my rough page layouts).

Hey, those roughs look like they're done with a wacom and photoshop.
Am I right? Are you digital?
Human upgrade imminent.....

Pretty much... it's a Wacom Intuos 1 A5 pad with a Stroke Pen stylus, but using Adobe Illustrator, which has certain advantages regarding editability, working with text and being able to generate things like perspective grids. Illustrator's great for making the solid "ink" drawing, but I go to Photoshop (and Corel Painter) for the colouring stages.

Hmmm never thought of using a vector package for free form illustration. I guess I'll give that a whirl....

It's kind of counter-intuitive for a lot of people - the lines don't flow off the pen quite as easily as with Photoshop or Painter - and if you don't have the pen tolerances set right the lines can "jump" to new positions after you've drawn them. In Illustrator, double-click on the brush tool and a dialog box will appear; set the two "Tolerances" sliders to minimum and uncheck all three boxes in the "Options" section. If you're using Adobe Illustrator 9 or later, try downloading the page template on my freebies page (see links sidebar on main blog) - it contains a set of brushes in useful widths, and some useful graphic styles.

Other programs: as far as I know, Freehand has treated pressure-sensitive strokes differently from Illustrator since version 7 (filled objects instead of the variable-thickness strokes used by Illustrator from v.8 on). I'm not sure what CorelDraw will do because there's no Mac version...

In fact (just having discovered how to put links into comments on Blogger) I use this Wacom tablet here.
