Oooh, I knew I knew the name... And I see what you mean. Ron Cobb has an impressive CV. I'd like to know more about Night Skies, for example. I'd never even HEARD of it.

I'm really enjoying the "The Great Game" stuff you've been posting. It looks like you're really enjoying yourself, and that nearly always makes for good art.

I'm a sucker for drawings of buildings. Good work.

I'd never heard of Night Skies either, thought most of what I know about Cobb comes from his monograph Colorvision (1981) and the Alien artbook, both of which just pre-date it.
I was glad to see he's continued making a good living, in fact as a result of visiting the site I have to shame-facedly confess to picking up Titan AE Cheap on DVD because of his (and Wayne Douglas Barlowe's) involvment.

Oh, but, sir, Titan AE is good fun, if, you know, a bit naff and "typical".

(I got to watch it free, so I can't really talk!)

BUT... But... doesn't it have a few surprisingly good sequences in amongst the ice? That are reminiscent of many great naval/submarine-ey movie sequences, and also the wonderful bits in "Laputa: The Floating Island" where the different factions dip in and out of massive cloud-banks?

Speaking of Titan...

Just been sent this by Dave Taylor, who also has a blog.

It shows the decent and touchdown of a probe on Titan. At one point it looks like it's coming down in the Indian Ocean.

I like Titan AE, but I'm not sure I can argue for it being that great - it's a made up of a lot of great bits (Ron Cobb's technology, Wayne Douglas Barlowe's aliens, Joss Whedon on script doctoring, good quality animation and CGI) that never seem to quite gel together. The bit with the ice field is pretty good, but for me the rendering is too realistic - the apparently solid spacecraft and ice crystals jar against the drawn animation style of the rest of it. Guess that's why it's a "guilty" pleasure...

I've yet to see it. Noticed it sitting on the shelves in Sainsburys for £4.99, but never quite dragged myself round to the idea. Shall have to haul my carcass on over to the supermarket and pick up a copy tonight.
